Anandpala

Anandpala
(?-1009)
A Hindu Shahi ruler of Lahore who came to the throne in 1001 after his father, Jaipala, committed suicide out of shame for his defeat at the hands of the Ghaznavids. In 1004-1005, Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni asked Anandpala to give passage and render help to a Ghaznavid expedition against the Qaramitah ruler of Mutlan. Anandpala resisted but was defeated. In 1008-1009, Anandpala was again attacked by Sultan Mahmud for sympathizing with Qaramitah. In a pitched battle at Ohind, Anandpala and his allies were defeated by the Ghaznavids, leading to the elimination of the Hindu Shahi principality. This paved the way for Sultan Mahmud's subsequent raids into India.
